IPL 2025 RULES

Franchises in the IPL can retain up to 6 players from their current squad, utilizing either retention options or the Right to Match (RTM) feature. It is up to each franchise to determine their mix of Retentions and RTMs. Among the 6, a maximum of 5 capped players (both Indian and overseas) and 2 uncapped players can be selected.

For IPL 2025, the auction purse for franchises has been set at INR 120 Crore. The overall salary cap will now include auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees. In contrast, the total salary cap in 2024 (comprising auction purse plus incremental performance pay) was Rs. 110 Crs, which will increase to Rs. 146 Crs in 2025, Rs. 151 Crs in 2026, and Rs. 157 Crs in 2027.

For the first time in IPL history, a match fee has been introduced. Each playing member (including the Impact Player) will receive a match fee of INR 7.5 Lakhs per match, in addition to their contracted salary.

All overseas players must register for the Big Auction. If an overseas player fails to register, they will be ineligible to register in the subsequent year’s player auction.

If a player registers for the auction but later becomes unavailable before the season starts after being selected, they will face a ban from participating in the tournament and future auctions for 2 seasons.

An Indian capped player will be considered uncapped if they have not played in the starting XI of any international format (Test, ODI, or T20I) in the last five calendar years before the relevant season or if they do not possess a Central Contract with the BCCI. This rule is exclusive to Indian players.

The Impact Player Regulation will remain in effect from 2025 to 2027.
